Company Description: William Cleereman was a lumberman. Before the turn of the century, he operated a sawmill at Green Bay, Wisconsin. Like all sawmills in the early days, the longer you ran in one spot, the further you got from the timber supply. As the hunt for logs expanded over greater distances, railroads began to figure more prominently in the business plans of sawmills. William Cleereman looked north to Green Bay to the untouched stands of timber in Forest County. His first land purchases in 1889, changed the course of the Cleereman family history, and indirectly made a tremendous impact on the sawmill industry that continues to this day. The logs produced from the first tracts he purchased in Forest County were delivered by rail, starting with the fledgling Soo Line RR, and after various connections arriving in Green Bay.
